Courtney Briggs Thieman is at it again, raising funds for the Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation. The 3rd annual Courtney's Cause for Cancer benefit brought hundreds of people to the Ambassador Conference Center.
Courtney, now a young mother, started battling ovarian cancer at age 19. She lost her hair during difficult chemotherapy treatments. After she was cured, she decided to help others by organizing a charity event. Part of her benefit involves others shaving their heads for donations. In some small way, it helps them identify with the experience of cancer patients. But Courtney's Cause is really about supporting others facing cancer and working toward a cure.
"I wanted to turn a negative into a positive and support the people who have to go through what I went through," said Courtney. "I really believe in the Kanzius foundation and I think that's the best place for the money to go."
Courtney's benefit raised $12 thousand the first year, $30 thousand the second. With a big turnout this year she hopes to raise even more. Courtney's own cancer is in remission but she says she will continue to do the benefit as long as she can.
