ADRIAN – The final outcome was a positive on Saturday during the annual Pink Zone game for the women's basketball team with a 65-56 win over Alma. The bad news however happened just about the same time as the win as Trine defeated Kalamazoo at home to secure the fourth and final spot in the MIAA Tournament. Adrian and Albion both finished fifth in the league with identical 7-9 records. Adrian also finished the season with an 8-16 overall mark.
The senior class was also sent away with a victory as Nicole Boggs, Jasmine Byersand Rachael Walker will be moving on. Boggs did not play due to injury but Byers had a good game off the bench with a game-high 13 rebounds. Byers scored five points and dished out three assists in 21 minutes. Walker scored three points and had one assist in 13 minutes.
Adrian controlled the paint allowing just six points while scoring 22. Junior LaQwana Dockery led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor and 7-of-9 at the free throw line. Dockery also had seven boards and two assists in 29 minutes. Freshman Antoinea McElroy registered a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Casey Fougerousse added 13 points making three triples in 30 minutes.
Adrian led 34-26 at halftime and outscored the Scots by one in the second half for the nine-point margin of victory. Adrian had a great game at the line going 19-of-23. The Bulldogs shot 37.5 percent from the floor and limited Alma to 30.5 percent from the floor. Alma also fared well at the line going 14-of-18. Grace Wheeler scored 17 points off the bench to lead the visitors. One eye-popping stat was Adrian plus-20 edge on the glass including 18 offensive rebounds and 12 second-chance points.
