Parks and recreation
could be on the chopping block in Adrian Michigan. Monday night residents showed just how
unhappy they are about the plan.
The city budget
shortfall is about $400,000 and administrators have laid off 30 people in the
last few years to make ends meet.
This year one of the
possible ideas is cutting the parks and recreation programs which includes Bohn
pool. The idea came up in a meeting last
week and Monday the community came out in force to tell the Adrian City
Commission that they're not interested in cutting parks and recreation.
There was no vote on the
idea Monday and the budget does not have to be finalized until May.
"If they close Bohn
pool, not just my summer, but a ton of people's summers won't be as fun as if
it were with Bohn pool. if they close Bohn
pool they won't have the swim team and if they don't have the swim team people
will be bored over the summer and I don't know about other people but my dream
is to be an Olympian in swimming and I don't think it will be able to happen if
Bohn pool closes," said Jake McKenize, a young Adrian resident.
"Obviously the
support for parks and rec is there. I
support parks and recreation so hopefully
through further budget talks we can avoid closures of any departments,"
said Cary Carrico, Adrian
mayor pro tem.
Monday's meeting was not
designed to just talk about parks and recreation but that dominated the
conversation. A town hall on parks and
recreation will be held Wednesday night.
