WASHINGTON, Feb. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The nation's leading organic and natural meat company, Applegate, has given Environmental Working Group (EWG) an educational grant in the amount of $25,000. EWG will use the grant to continue developing cutting-edge research that helps consumers identify foods produced without chemicals and other substances that could pose risks to people's health.

"EWG and Applegate share many common goals," said Applegate CEO and Founder Stephen McDonnell. "We both want people to have the information they need in order to make the best choices about food for themselves and their families.  But today's complex food system makes this difficult. That's where EWG steps in. EWG has focused on giving people top-shelf, easy-to-use advice on healthy, sustainable, and chemical-free foods for years, and Applegate wants to recognize and support their efforts on behalf of our customers and all those who want to know the facts about how their food is raised and produced."

EWG President and Co-founder Ken Cook added: "My colleagues and I at EWG have spent 20 years holding industrial agriculture to account for actions that have been detrimental to both the environment and our health, and at the same time, giving consumers the best advice we can on choosing better foods. And with the generous support of Applegate we will continue to do just that."
