A sports complex in Ashtabula County today was named an official Olympic training site. The U.S. Olympic Committee named the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, a training site for Team USA Track and Field and wheelchair basketball athletes.
The huge, four year old complex is already a busy place, hosting many championships in track and field, swimming and diving and other sports.
The new designation is likely to bring more world class athletes to our region to train.
Alicia McConnell of the U.S. Olympic Committee said, "It is an incredible facility that is going to help our athletes be the best they can be."
Four time gold medalist Michael Johnson said, "Facilities like this inspire people."
And the designation is also expected to be a big boost to the economy in the region from Erie to Cleveland.
