SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say a man in custody on an
alleged parole violation apparently hanged himself in his cell at the
western Ohio jail.
Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly says Springfield
police brought 52-year-old David Brent Newland, of St. Paris, to the
jail shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday.
The sheriff said in a release that deputies
assigned to the jail found Newland hanging in his cell when they did a
check of inmates about 3:30 Saturday morning. Authorities say the
deputies began life saving measures, but Newland was declared dead when
paramedics arrived a few minutes later.
The sheriff says jail officials appeared to have
strictly followed established procedures. But Kelly says the death
remains under investigation by his office and the Clark County coroner's
office.
