Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott and FOP President Ken Kensill released details of a new four year agreement that will provide four percent wage increases every year but will also require officers to pay 15% of their health insurance costs.
It is the first time in 30 years that a multi-year agreement was reached without the use of an outside neutral arbitrator.
"Without the binding arbitration we were able to focus on the issues that are important to both sides," Mayor Joe Sinnott told reporters.
"If we're able to sit down and talk it out and come to conclusions ourselves we don't have to have that neutral party come in and make those decisions for us." FOP President Ken Kensill said.
Erie firefighters previously agreed to a new contract but left the insurance co-pay issue open saying they too will agree to what the police have.
That means that in January of 2014 all city workers will be paying the 15 percent insurance co-pay..
