Plans for student housing could crowd out businesses

Posted: Updated:

There are plans for new off-campus student housing near the University of Toledo. A spokesperson says Polaris Real Estate Equities is planning to build new apartments on Bancroft near Westwood.

Right not the space is home to a coffee shop, a bar and Rick's City Diner, but owner Rick Salem said there were plans to move.

"Would you pull into a place with wrecking balls? I'm rendered useless." Salem said.

Salem has been at the Bancroft location for three years, but says the new project leaves no room for customers.

"In a way I get it, they are trying to get students out of the neighborhood, clean it up after problems and crime; so giving them something new, that I understand."

The idea is getting mixed reviews from students like Jordan Margalat. "Student housing is cool, but I'd like to see something for students to do at night."

The timeline isn't official for the new construction, but nearby business owners say construction could begin this fall.

If a tornado threatens, get into the basement. If you don't have a basement, a small, interior room in the lowest floor of your home is relatively safe. Avoid rooms with windows. Mobile homes are not safe in a tornado.
