A contract is now in place for the annual sand replenishment at Presque Isle. And a new company will handle the work.
An Akron, Ohio firm, SAF Inc. won the 3 year contract with a bid of $6.3 million. If ice is gone along the lakeside beaches, the goal is to have the trucks start moving sand by April 1.
And with a signed contract and the federal and state funds all in place, any mandatory spending cuts happening in Washington, D.C. will not affect the project.
Park Manager Harry Leslie said, "Because the contract was already awarded then the sequestration is not going to affect them. it would be one of the contract they would have to honor."
Crews will begin their work using sand already stockpiled at North Pier. Other sand will be shipped in later.
