WESTBOROUGH, Mass., March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Anoto, the world leader in digital writing technology, today announced that its solutions are being increasingly adopted by specialty practices as a result of its ease of use and streamlined approach in the transition to electronic health records (EHR).

It is critical for specialty physicians adopting EHR technologies to have as little disruption in day to day activities as possible. However, each specialty – whether it's Rheumatology, Radiology, Ophthalmology or any others – has its own unique needs specific to that type of practice which can result in a slower transition process.
Under the current Stage 1 Meaningful Use regulations, eligible professionals must use computerized physician order entry (CPOE) (also referred to as computerized provider order entry) for 30 percent of their patients. Without doing so, the physician will not qualify for the incentive payments. Digital writing technology provides a way for specialty practices to continue to work the way they always have, using forms customized for their particular specialty. Anoto's technology turns the forms into a live digital document that is immediately available electronically, streamlining the transition to electronic records.
Anoto works with partners around the world who are experts in healthcare to deploy digital writing solutions that capture structured EHR data directly from pen and paper. Some of the key partners onsite with Anoto at HIMSS 2013 include:

NextPen® solution with NextGen Healthcare:
How it Works
The digital pen has a tiny camera in the tip. The camera interprets the pen's position on the patient forms by reading a faint dot pattern added to the page when printed. Each pattern is unique to that specific sheet of paper, ensuring that all data goes to the correct patient record. The solution requires no special printer or paper; you can print from your own printer, using normal office paper. Once the information is captured, users then simply place the pen in a USB docking station, or use its Bluetooth capability to review and approve the data. A perfect image of the form is also captured and can automatically be attached to the record, making it ideal for signatures and drawings.
