A church pew giveaway by the Sisters of Saint Joseph left many people angry and disappointed this morning.
People started lining up at the former Villa Chapel as early as 2 o'clock this morning for the 9am giveaway. About 50 pews were available. They were gone within 20 minutes.
Many people in line had an emotional attachment to the former chapel and wanted a pew for sentimental reasons. They were upset because only a few people grabbed up all of the available pews. The rules stated that each person in line could have two pews until the supply was exhausted.
However, the people at the front of the line were antique dealers who, apparently, brought friends.
Katherine Kloecker graduated from Villa School 67 years ago. She wanted a memento from her school days.
"I'm very disappointed," she said. "I get here at ten after seven. I graduated 67 years ago from this beloved school and I just wanted one little seat. I didn't get it."
A spokesperson for the Sisters of Saint Joseph said..
"The sisters had no idea of the level of interest. They are humbled and amazed at the response."
