On this year's Oscars red carpet, gaudy jewels, bright makeup, gown excess and elaborate hairstyles were replaced with a strikingly simple celeb style. Charlize Theron, for example, hit every note perfectly. From her strapless stark-white Dior gown to her unfussy sculpted hairdo, she was the personification of clean Oscars glamour. Here's what else defined this year's Oscars look.

1. Polished, Healthy, Shiny Hair

Not only were acceptance speeches tame at the Oscars 2013, hair was behaving nicely as well. Teasing and wispy tendrils were nowhere in sight. Updos were polished with no stray strands. Beach waves were banished.

Instead, the vintage curls of A-list celebs like Reese Witherspoon and Catherine Zeta-Jones flowed flawlessly.

2. Gorgeous Statement Dresses

2013 was the year of the statement dress. It was all about the cut and shape of the dress, with simple color palettes and a refreshing lack of appliqués.

Naomi Watts shone in her sleek Armani metallic dress with an off-center shoulder cutout. Jennifer Lawrence dazzled in a soft-colored Dior with an amazing sharp train (and she was somehow able to make tripping over it absolutely charming as she dashed to the stage to accept her Best Actress statuette!). Jessica Chastain wowed in a strapless glimmering coppery-nude Armani gown.

3. Understated Jewelry

Jewelry was understated this year -- a brilliant way to let the architectural details of gorgeous gowns snag the spotlight. The jewels we did see were bright colorless stones in unadorned settings. Even the size of the jewels themselves were scaled back to minimize distraction.

4. Soft, Feature-defining Makeup

Likewise, less was definitely more when it came to makeup. There were even a few (gasp!) false-eyelash-free faces to be found.

Colored shadows were swapped for neutrals. Smoky eyes were replaced by soft. Cheeks shone with pops of blush, and nude lips were pretty much the standard for the pretty people.

It was a red carpet that was simply, and gorgeously, brilliant!
