The American Cancer Society is working on one of its biggest research projects ever, and they're asking for the Erie community to get involved.
On Wednesday, the organization launched the"Greater Erie Cancer Prevention Study Enrollment" at the Glenwood United Methodist Church.
It's called the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (or CPS-3) and by the end of 2013, the American Cancer Society is trying to get 300,000 people involved. They are currently at 185,000.
Those who enroll, are asked to fill out a survey on their lifestyle habits. They're asked about things like diet, exercise, and family history of cancer and disease. The organization also performs a waist measurement and blood check.
Throughout the study, the American Cancer Society will follow each person for 20 years, with follow-up surveys. But, there are some guidelines in order to participate.
"They have to be between the ages of 30-65, we're looking for men and women of all ethnic and racial groups," said Anna-Marrie Labowski of the American Cancer Society. "We want to have a nice diverse group of people, but they have to be between 30-65 and never have been diagnosed with cancer."
