Erie Catholic Bishop Lawrence Persico today told parishioners at St. Peter Cathedral he has hired an auditing firm to learn what led to serious financial problems at the parish school.
As we reported last month, the school owes the IRS more than $300,000. The agency placed a lien on the school property after the school failed to send in employee withholding taxes during five quarterly periods in 2011 and 2012.
Today Bishop Persico said the diocese has hired a local firm to do a forensic audit to determine what happened and to address the situation.
He expects the audit will take a few months. And he told parishioners he will report back to them when the audit is done.
