Warmer weather the past few days has meant some melting of the ice dunes at Presque Isle. But not enough to allow tomorrow's annual beach survey to take place.
The beach walk has been re-scheduled for March 19. And it could be pushed back even later, depending on the weather.
Park managers like to get the survey done early, to allow experts to come up with a plan to allow for an early start for sand replenishment. But that can't happen with the giant dunes still in place.
Park Manager Harry Leslie said, "You have to be able to view that interface between where the water is and where the shoreline is. Until the ice dunes are down enough, we really can't project where we need to have the work done, the final things."
Funding for the sand replenishment program is in place. And a contract for the project has been signed. But the survey walk is needed to lay the groundwork for the project.
