March is National Women's History Month, and each year, the Council of Women's Organizations in Erie celebrates with a banquet.
Women in Erie gathered at the Maennerchor Club Monday night, just as they do every March. Each year, the National Women's History Project selects a theme for the month. This year's theme is Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women In Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
The Council of Women's Organizations selects a speaker each year that goes along with the theme. This year's speaker was Erie native, Dr. Michelle Zimmerman.
Dr. Zimmerman said that in the past century, women have made a great impact in science, and more girls are now choosing careers in the field.
She also believes its good to look ahead to where women still need to go.
"They've made significant contributions," said Dr. Zimmerman. "There have been many Nobel Laureates and we're hoping with increased access to education and mentoring women of women who have already come through, that we'll have more opportunities."
Dr. Zimmerman added that she believes it's important for women to honor each other, and come up with new ideas to help encourage young women to get involved.
