24-year old Ulysses Altland was told by a judge that he would not be there to see his kids grow up, after sentencing Altland to 10 to 31 years in jail for the shooting death of 40-year old Brent Washington.
Altland was attending a birthday party at Wagner's Bar at West 8th and Cascade Streets when an argument broke out. Altland went to his nearby home and grabbed a gun, came back and shot and killed Washington. Altland's sister Monica was accidentally wounded in the shooting.
Judge John Garhart sentenced Altland for the death, the reckless endangering of others at the bar, possessing a weapon and violating his parole on another charge.
"With your temper you should not carry a gun," the judge told Altland.
The uncle of the victim told Altland that he hopes he uses his time away to "get his act together."
Altland told the judge "I never meant for this to happen. It was the worst decision of my life."
