New York City's ban on big sugary drinks was supposed to take effect today, but it's on hold after a ruling by the NY State Supreme Court. People we talked with outside a local fast food restaurant say they are glad the high court struck down the measure. They see it as a personal freedom issue, more than a health issue.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg pushed for the ban of restaurant soft drinks 16-ounces or over. He says it's time to stop talking about how America's eating habits are leading to obesity, diabetes and heart disease and to start doing something about it.
Because this could be a precedent setting measure...people here in Erie are paying attention. They don't like the ban that's now on hold.
"I don't agree with it," said Katie Reina, "I think everybody should be allowed to have the amount that they want to drink everyday, there should be no ban." Some of the local residents we interviewed said it's up to parents to teach their children better habits and one person told us he was obese until he switched to diet soda.
