Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been chosen by cardinals gathered in Rome as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Archbishop of Buenos Aires was chosen over two days of voting by the cardinals in the Sistine Chapel.
A Jesuit, Bergoglio is one of five children. He is 76 years old and has had health problems in the past.
He addressed the crowd about 3:20 EST, thanking them for their warm welcome. More to come.
