FREDERICKSBURG, Va., March 19, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) congratulates the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) for continuing to support roadway safety infrastructure investments designed to reduce injuries and fatalities in its 2013 Report Card for America's Infrastructure.

"Improved safety should be a key driving force behind financial investments in America's highways," said Roger Wentz, ATSSA's president and CEO. "We can improve the current conditions on our highways and roads by identifying deficiencies and appropriately repairing and upgrading lanes, medians and the safety features on our highway system."

"We lose more than 33,000 of our family members, friends and neighbors at an economic cost of about $230 billion each year because of needless deaths on our highways," Wentz said. "It's imperative that we make an effort to reduce these human losses by correcting dangerous, poorly designed and under maintained roadways."

ATSSA supports ASCE's assessment that further investment in the Highway Safety Improvement Program will lead to significant improvements and reduced crashes on America's highways. Poor roadway conditions are considered a factor in about one-third of all U.S. traffic fatalities.
