ROCKETS - FALCONS WIN
The University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University women's basketball teams started their post season play with victories tonight. UT began the Women's National Invitational Tournament at Savage Arena tonight with a 63-49 win over Butler. The Rockets play Youngstown State on Saturday at 2pm. The Falcons also won their first round WNIT contest beating SMU 76-70. BGSU next plays Duquesne at the Stroh Center on Saturday.
MUD HENS TICKETS
The Toledo Mud Hens open their home season April 11th. The Hens take on the Louisville Bats at Fifth Third Field. Standing room only tickets go on sale tomorrow.
TANNING SALON BAN
Doctors are calling on Michigan lawmakers to ban minors from tanning salons. Democratic legislators introduced a bill that would make it a misdemeanor for salon owners to allow young patrons to tan. Right now parents are required to sign for their children.
ANTI-BULLY SUMMIT
Perrysburg teachers, parents and community members are pushing to prevent bullying. County prosecutor Paul Dobson presented an anti-bullying summit tonight. The event focused on how to keep students safe. We talked to one mother, who's also a teachers, who says she wants to be informed. Kellie Johnson said, "Bullying is a real problem. It's happened for a long time and we try to do as many things as we possibly can in our school."
SPEED LIMIT
(AP) - A bill setting in motion Governor John Kasich's plan for a $1.5 billion Ohio Turnpike bond sale and increasing Ohio's speed limit to 70 miles per hour on rural interstate highways has cleared the state Legislature. The Ohio House passed the two-year transportation budget 63-28 on Thursday. Kasich is expected to sign it.
STEUBENVILLE INVESTIGATION
(AP) - Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor has appointed a special judge to oversee the work of a grand jury investigating possible new charges related to the rape of a 16-year-old girl in Steubenville last summer. Jefferson County judge Joseph Bruzzese says "nameless bloggers" who made unproven allegations of a cover-up have a strong following that makes appointing a judge from outside Steubenville necessary.
OHIO REPUBLICANS
(AP) - A group of self-identified Ohio conservatives says it's parting ways with the state Republican party because of recent events including Senator Rob Portman's policy shift in favor of same-sex marriage. More than 80 signed an open letter sent today, including former state legislators, tea party leaders and issue advocates.
COLORADO SHOOTING SUSPECT
(AP) - There's an ID on the man who may be linked to the slaying of Colorado prison chief Tom Clements. A federal law enforcement official confirms a Denver Post report that the man who led Texas authorities on a high-speed car chase was 28-year-old Evan Spencer Ebel, who has a criminal record. The chase ended in a shootout. Officials say Ebel is essentially dead, but is hooked up to equipment so his organs can be harvested.
SUPER BOWL POWER FAILURE
(AP) - An outside expert investigating the cause of a partial power outage during this year's Super Bowl has confirmed that the failure occurred because a relay device malfunctioned. Entergy, which supplies electricity to the Superdome, has said it believed the outage was caused by an electrical relay device it installed specially to prevent a power failure at the dome.
IMPROVING ECONOMY
(AP) - Three new reports offer additional evidence that the economy is improving after stalling at the end of last year. The four-week average in the number of people seeking unemployment benefits is at a five-year low. There's also word that sales of previously occupied homes are at their highest level in more than five years. And a measure of future economic growth increased last month for the third straight month. But stocks have finished the day lower, dragged down by weak sales results at Oracle and concerns that Cyprus is running out of time to avoid bankruptcy.
SPENDING PLAN
(AP) - The government will keep running for the next six months, under a spending plan approved today by the House and sent to President Barack Obama for his signature. It leaves in place $85 billion in spending cuts to the Pentagon and domestic agencies. And that will mean temporary furloughs for hundreds of thousands of federal workers and contractors over the next six months.
POWERBALL JACKPOT
(AP) - People dreaming of riches will once again be lining up for Powerball tickets. Lottery officials say no ticket matched all of the numbers in Wednesday night's drawing, so the current $320 million jackpot could swell before the next drawing on Saturday. It's already the sixth highest in history.
