Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott today honored members of an Erie high school class who took part in a unique project. Sinnott presented a proclamation to Central Tech's machine trades and technology program.
He praised the students for designing and fabricating aluminum scrolls in honor of the children and adults killed in the mass shooting earlier this year at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. The scrolls will be personally delivered to the community over the Easter weekend.
Student Diandre Thompkins said, "It was a tragedy. We wanted to give the family something to cope with, so they did not have to go through it alone. Just to know we are there for them and they can get through it with emotional support."
Teachers say the students could related to the victims, because many of the Erie students had lost family members.
