Two giant ships that have been undergoing winter repairs and maintenance here in Erie are scheduled to leave tomorrow. About 50 workers have been doing repairs on the 1,000 foot freighters, Presque Isle and Edwin Gott.
The ships have been here since late January. But now the work has wrapped up and the ships are preparing to leave to once again start hauling iron ore on Lake Superior.
Managers say the layup went well, despite harsh weather.
Tod Eagleton of Erie Sand and Gravel said, "The big thing is we accomplished it safely with no injuries or accidents which is a big plus. Weather of course played against us all year. It has been a tough winter, especially compared to last year. But all in all, everything went well."
Crews from Erie Sand and Gravel and Don Jon Shipbuilding worked on the freighters. Outside contractors were also involved.
