Bowling Tournament Benefits Children's Charities

Posted: Updated:

Not one lane was empty at the Charities for Children classic on Sunday.

Strike, spare or gutter ball, teams raised money for 14 local children's charities.

The classic has been lending a helping hand for 25 years, but their reach has grown every year since 1988.

"Back then I think we had three different children's charities and we donated $484," said Tournament Director Rick Makowski. "In the last seven years it's been over 25 thousand dollars."

That impressive number comes from entrance fees and the generosity of sponsors.

"They donate anything from 200 dollars up," said Makowski. "We've had some organizations donate 3,000 dollars and 1,500 dollars, so it's really rolled over pretty well."

A few of the charities on this years list are the Barber Center, the Make a Wish foundation, and the Children's Miracle Network.

Tom Kaveney and his team bowled for CMN, "to give back to Children's Miracle Network directly and for new equipment at the hospitals ,and different charities that they get involved with too."

"Last year I think we raised over $5,000 so we're hoping for maybe a little bit more than that," Kaveney said.

Many teams had personal reasons for supporting their chosen charity.

The Barber Center team was made up of clients and their families, who see the good work they do firsthand.

One bowler spoke of how the center helped his sister. "It was just spectacular to see how she improved and made the whole family situation even better," he said, "because the mentally challenged children are a gift of love, that's all they know is love."

No matter where the money was going, the community support from 400 bowlers and several businesses was a strike for everyone.

"Erie's a giving town, always has been always will be," one participant said.

Charities for Children has added a golf tournament to their fundraising efforts, so look out for that opportunity to get involved this Summer.

Lilly Broadcasting had our team out and was proud to be part of this cause!
