Upcoming in Gray Wolves Baseball: Lourdes will play three doubleheaders over a five-day span beginning on Thursday afternoon as the Gray Wolves continue Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play. Lourdes will host Indiana Tech on Thursday afternoon in a twinbill that was originally scheduled for Fort Wayne, Ind. on Wednesday. The Gray Wolves will then travel to Adrian, Mich. on Saturday and Monday to face Siena Heights in games that wrap around Easter.
Head Coach Andy Ham: In his second season on the Lourdes bench, Andy Ham has an 16-57 (.219) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his fourth season overall as a head baseball coach, Ham has a 41-104 (.283) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Probable Starters: Sophomore Frank Shaffer (RHP, 1-2, 5.28) will be handed the baseball in game one on Thursday against Indiana Tech while Drew Lepiarz (LHP, 3-1, 4.21) will toe the rubber in the second game of the conference twinbill. Kyle Vandecaveye (RHP, 1-2, 4.66) is slated to throw game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Siena Heights while Lee Lovejoy (RHP, 2-2, 4.57) is scheduled to pitch in game number two. Shaffer and Lepiarz are then expected to return to the hill on Monday for the second twinbill against the Saints.
Series Notes: Indiana Tech leads the all-time series against Lourdes 4-0 after sweeping a four-game series at Mercy Field last season. The Warriors posted 15-2 and 6-1 victories on day one before downing the Gray Wolves 2-0 and 8-2 on the second day of play. Siena Heights is 5-0 all-time against the Gray Wolves after downing Lourdes 2-1 on March 3 of this season in a game played in Babson Park, Fla. The Saints swept four games from Lourdes last season at Mercy Field, winning 10-1 and 2-0 on the first day. The second doubleheader saw Siena Heights post an 8-7 win in 17 innings before defeating the Gray Wolves 9-1 in the nightcap.
Wrapping Up Last Week: The Gray Wolves dropped three games last weekend at home against Aquinas in WHAC action. On Saturday afternoon, the Saints broke open a close game with six runs in the top of the ninth of game one on the way to a 10-1 victory. Lourdes scored four times in the first of game two and lead 4-3 heading into the ninth, but Aquinas scored a pair in the final frame to post a 5-4 victory over the Gray Wolves. On Sunday, Aquinas scored nine times after two were out in the fifth and defeated Lourdes 13-2. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to the cold and wind.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors enter play on Thursday winners of six straight games following a doubleheader sweep of Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday afternoon at home. Justin Kalusa leads Indiana Tech batting .377 on the season with 16 runs batted in while Ben Christian is hitting at a .362 clip with two home runs and 12 RBI. As a team the Warriors are batting .307 while the pitching staff has a 3.52 earned run average.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have dropped three straight games entering this week after falling in both ends of a doubleheader at Cornerstone on Saturday afternoon. Mike Lollo leads Siena Heights batting .409 on the year while Corey Caldwell is hitting .407. As a team, the Saints are batting .253 through 12 games while the pitching staff has posted a 4.45 earned run average.
Matching Last Year's Win Total: In 53 games last season Lourdes won just eight games. This year the Gray Wolves have already matched that win total, doing so just 17 games into the season. The Gray Wolves have also matched their home win total of two after sweeping its first doubleheader in program history against Goshen.
Slamming the Door: Matt Olsavsky has already recorded six saves for Lourdes this year, a mark that ranks eighth among all NAIA schools. The freshman has allowed just one earned run in nine appearances, spanning 9.1 innings of work.
Streaking: John Crooks enters the weekend on an eight game hitting streak. The junior leads the team batting .339 this season and has driven home 11 runs. He ranks 16th in the nation with three triples already this year.
More Streaks: Ryan Kovar has reached base safely in 11 consecutive games after drawing a walk to extend the streak on Sunday afternoon. He shares the team lead with 11 walks in 38 plate appearances this season and has a team-leading .472 on base percentage.
New Addition to the WHAC: The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has expanded from eight to nine teams in baseball for the upcoming 2013 season. Cornerstone will begin playing baseball this season, following in the footsteps of Lourdes as a newcomer last year.
Captains Named: Lourdes has four captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2013 are Tim DeCant, Phill Dysard, Austin Gunn, and Ryan Kovar.
