The Bowling Green State University softball team lost a tough game to Ohio Saturday afternoon, falling to the Bobcats by a score of 5-1 at Meserve Field. The loss drops the Falcons' overall record to 17-12, with a record of 3-4 in MAC play.
Senior Paige Berger collected one of Bowling Green's two hits in the game, earning a double and a run scored in a 1-for-3 performance. Junior Katie Yoho recorded the lone Falcon RBI, going 1-for-3 on the day. Sophomore Jamie Kertes (6-7) picked up the loss after allowing five hits and two earned runs in 4.0 innings, while also recording five strikeouts. Fellow sophomore Paris Imholz pitched the final 3.0 frames, allowing four hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts.
Ohio got on the board first, thanks to a solo home run from Lauren Gellerman in the top of the first inning. The Bobcats added a second run in the top of the fourth, giving Ohio the 2-0 lead before the Falcons responded with a run of their own.
Berger started the bottom of the fourth with a shot to center field, nearly clearing the fence for an easy double. Yoho followed up with a line drive single through the middle of the infield, allowing Berger to score from second base.
Ohio would answer right back in the top of the sixth, crossing home plate one time on two hits to stretch the Bobcat lead to 3-1. In the top of the seventh, Gellerman hit a two-run shot for her second home run of the day, stretching Ohio's lead to 5-1 in the final inning. Bowling Green was unable to score again in the contest, giving the Bobcats the conference win.
"Ohio is a good team and I'm not taking anything away from them, but I don't think we gave them our best shot either," said head coach Shannon Salsburg. "Tomorrow we are going to make sure we are aggressive in all facets, and we'll do everything in our power to get a W and split the series."
