Edinboro Alternative Spring Break

Posted: Updated:

Edinboro , PA - Instead of traveling to an exotic locale for spring break, a group of Edinboro University staff and students took a little "fiesta fun" with them March 18-22 when they completed an alternative spring break service trip to Cleveland, Ohio.

The University issued a news release reporting the group made nightly meals for residents of the Cleveland Ronald McDonald House, which is located near the Cleveland Clinic. Ronald McDonald Houses across the nation provide support for the families of children battling life-threatening conditions and undergoing medical treatment.

"We had the opportunity to cook meals for the families, play games, and make crafts with them," said Melissa Gibson, Edinboro University Community Outreach Director. "Of course we had fun by holding ‘theme' nights. One night we had a Tex-Mex fiesta theme, and another night we had a pirate theme."

Various groups, such as churches, schools and corporations, volunteer to cook for the Ronald McDonald residents to provide complimentary meals to families that already have incurred hefty medical costs associated with the care of their loved ones.

"We were very fortunate to have all of our food donated by Comfort Suites of Edinboro," Gibson said. "They stepped forward and offered canned and frozen food that we used in our meal preparation. We are so appreciative of their donation."

In addition, Edinboro University's Student Government Association provided funding for students to attend the alternative spring break. For many students, this was their first service trip.

"I expected just to do volunteer work and go back to my regular everyday life. However, the first shift I did at the Ronald McDonald house was touching," said Evan Williams, a graduate student studying school counseling. "Hearing stories about families whose loved ones are battling life-threatening illness really ignited me to do all that I can do to make them feel loved."
