Student Shot in Fight Near Strong Vincent High School

Posted: Updated:

A high school student from Strong Vincent is hospitalized with multiple gun shot wounds after another student shot him several times in a dispute after school.  Other students who witnessed the incident say a crowd had gathered for a planned fight at West 8th and Cranberry near the school.  Erie Police Chief Steve Franklin confirms that there was a planned fight after school.  He says the victim was a Strong Vincent sophomore, but says the student who produced a gun during the fight is a student from Central High School.

The shooting incident happened just before 3:30 PM.  Witness Tanner Loeslein says he heard about the fight and came to watch.  He told us a crowd of students had gathered on both sides of the street.  I first heard students shout, "Gun, gun, gun," said Tanner, "then I backed up and heard five or six shots and I saw my friend...shot in the leg."

Rescuers transporting the victim to the hospital identified him as 15-years old and said was suffering from at least three bullet wounds, some to the abdomen.  He was conscious when taken to UPMC Hamot trauma.

Police at the scene said they were looking for a black male with short hair and a pink shirt.  Police confirm that they took several students to the police station for questioning and that one of the students in custody is the alleged shooter.  The shooter also may be 15-years old, according to Chief Franklin.  Police recovered shell casings at the scene but have not said what kind of weapon was used, or what the teens were arguing about.
