Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Glenn Thompson sent WICU/WSEE this statement in response to the announcement today by GE Transportation concerning its intent to transfer production operations from its Lawrence Park facility in Erie County, PA., to Fort Worth, TX.
"This is a tremendous loss for Erie County, especially for the individuals and families directly impacted by these layoffs. This is a major upset and I am extremely disappointed. Moving forward we must pull together as a community and support those affected by this decision," stated Rep. Thompson.
Officials from GE Transportation cited a "response to lower order and production volume within locomotive and mining businesses due to decreased coal demand" as the justification for the restructuring, which could result in approximately 950 Erie Plant employees being impacted.
"GE's announcement is another reminder of how the Administration's regulatory agenda is impacting more and more businesses connected to the coal industry's supply chain. Equally so, this move raises questions as to what the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania can be doing to become more competitive, improve business retention and expand job growth," Rep. Thompson added.
