Hundreds Rally for GE Jobs

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of GE workers, family members and community supporters rallied outside the plant's East Gate this afternoon.

They are showing support for upcoming talks that the workers hope can reduce or eliminate plans from the company to move a key production line to Texas and eliminate more than a thousand Erie jobs.

The loss of 20% of the GE workforce in Erie would have massive ripple effects across the economy, affecting vendors and suppliers as well as local restaurants, grocery stores and retail.

The job losses also affect Erie's sense of generational identity. Sue Merritt, who attended the rally, says that combined, her family has 300 years of service at Erie's GE plant.

"We got to fight for this because there's many good jobs that may be lost." she told us.

Incoming GE 506 President Scott Duke puts in more dollar and cents terms.

"This is the best skilled work force that GE has, we make the money for GE, all we ask is they get us the parts, get us more work and let us build them a product."

The union and the company will now enter 60 days of negotiations per union contract that the workers hope can be used to reduce the impact of the GE announcement.
