Erie Runners Share Marathon Experiences

Posted: Updated:

A number of marathon runners from our area are making their way home from Boston. We have confirmed that the participants from the local area are safe, but some had close calls with the tragedy.  Longtime local runner Dave Vickey picked up his Boston Marathon medal today, even though he was stopped short of the finish because of the explosion. He had some tense moments when he couldn't find his family. "They weren't at the family meeting area," said Vickey, "after using three different people's cell phones I finally reached them and was able to reconnect at the Boston Commons area."

Crawford County Judge John Spataro finished the Boston Marathon eleven minutes before the blast.  As he was picking up his bag from the luggage area for runners, he heard the blast, and saw the smoke.  He says he was just 150 yards from the finish line.  "So if I has run just eleven minutes slower my family would have been at the finish line area and so would I, I don't even want to think about that, eleven minutes made the difference from being victimized and not, which is why I feel so much empathy for those not so fortunate," said Spataro

For people who lived through it or are part of the family of runners, will the events have a chilling effect on future races? Already eyes are on the Pittsburgh Marathon coming up on may 5th. Police and organizers are reviewing security for that race. Over 100 Erie runners are expected to take part. Our Boston runners say what they went through won't stop them from future races.  "Absolutely not," said Spataro, "it was an awful terrible tragedy but it will not dissuade me in any way shape or form."
