Cleaning Up Dead Fish at Presque Isle

Posted: Updated:

Crews are now busy cleaning up at least some of the huge numbers of dead fish at Presque Isle. Park maintenance crews are using heavy equipment to scoop piles piles of dead gizzard shad at Horseshoe Pond.

Biologists say the fish began dying off in large numbers under the ice at Presque Isle Bay in the late winter. And they have been decaying ever since, with the smell getting worse as the weather warms up.

Crews will try to cleanup the mess in public areas, including boat ramps, with the work starting near the houseboats at Horseshoe Pond.

Park Maintenance Supervisor Rick Zemanek said, "The boat owners were ready to get into their homes. It is not good for them. So we will get this area cleaned up first."

Crews expect to continuing cleaning up dead fish for the next 2 weeks. The loads of the dead fish will be taken to the landfill.
