Home Care Assistants, Clients Rally for Expanded Health Care

Posted: Updated:

Home care assistants joined with their clients and others in rallying support to get Governor Tom Corbett to change his mind of expanding Medicaid health insurance.

The Affordable Care Act has earmarked 43 billion dollars for Pennsylvania to expand coverage to more than 700,000 working poor in the Commonwealth.

Corbett and other Republican Governors have said they will not accept the money because Washington doesn't have it to spend and the states will ultimately bear the cost of the expanded coverage.

But recently it has been the Republican governors backtracking. Many in states like Virginia and Ohio and Arizona have changed their minds because the money is already earmarked for the program.

The ralliers are hoping that Governor Corbett joins them.

"These are good, hard working people who all they want is a helping hand," Voices for Independence Executive Director Shona Eakin told us.

Home care attendant Mary Lou Camry was more direct.

"He needs to change his mind right now" she said.
