Suspects in Custody for Chautauqua County Double Murder

Posted: Updated:

Four men are in custody, awaiting formal arraignment on charges they murdered a married couple in Chautauqua County. The victims were found dead early yesterday when volunteer firefighters responded to a call at their log home along Wheeler Hill Road in the Town of Carroll.

Sheriff Joe Gerace said the victims, 66 year old Gordon Skinner and his wife, 59 year old Joyce Skinner were the victims of a home invasion, but he said the crime was not random.

Authorities are released few details of their investigation. However,  Gerace called the crime "deeply troubling."

He said, "In my 34 years in law enforcement this is one of the most disturbing and troubling incidents I have had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family members and friends of the Skinners."

Authorities identify the suspects as 34 year old David Cogins, 21 year old Joshua McCormick, 18 year old Steven Todd and 18 year old Ricky Knickerbocker. They were all arrested in Elmira, New York, then brought to the Chautauqua County Jail in Mayville.

Deputies will not say if any of the suspects knew the victims. And they are not commenting on how the victims were killed. But Gerace did say a firearm was not used.
