Widget Financial New Name for GE Credit Union

Posted: Updated:

The Erie General Electric Federal Credit Union has unveiled its new name and logo.  Officially it is now called Widget Federal Credit Union, but will do business as simply Widget Financial.  Gail Cook, President and CEO of Widget tells us the process of changing names has been underway for a year.  They tested forty five different name options before finding the right one.  They wanted to use the letters G-E-T in the name in tribute to GE  Transportation.  "We tried to do something with GET for GE transportation, but all the get names were taken," said Cook, "so we did searches for other words with get in them and that's where widget came from

The credit union started 77 years ago to serve employees working at Erie's General Electric Transportation plant, but has since opened its doors to offer financial services to all who live in Erie and Crawford counties.  In addition the credit union merged with sixteen other credit unions including the Erie Postal Credit Union and Hamot Federal Credit Union.

GE corporate in Connecticut in January asked the Erie credit union and others across the country to stop using the GE name and logo.  Cook says they were already planning a name change, as other corporations were taking similar action across the country.

Widget recently hit $260 million in assets and is continually regarded by federal examiners to be operating in a sound and fiscally responsible manner.  The financial cooperative has over 36,000 member-owners in the United States and Canada.
