Senior LHP Kyle Shaw was selected the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 15-21, the league office announced on Monday. Shaw's selection marks the third time this season that a Rocket has been picked as either the division's top hurler or hitter.
Shaw is also receiving this distinguished honor for the first time this spring and third time in his collegiate career. The southpaw pitcher also earned the recognition for the week of March 15-21, 2010 and most recently April 25-May 1, 2011.
Shaw tossed a three-hit jewel and paced Toledo to an 11-0 series-opening victory against MAC West Division preseason favorite Central Michigan on Saturday at Scott Park. The LaGrange, OH native went the distance for the third time in his UT career and faced only 33 batters in earning his team-best fourth triumph in 2013. Shaw kept the CMU hitters off-balance all afternoon and finished with a career-high nine strikeouts and no walks. The fifth-year senior retired the opposition in order on five occasions and the most batters he faced in an inning was six in the second frame.
Overall this spring, Shaw is 4-5 with 45 punchouts and a 3.27 ERA in 66.0 frames of work. He currently ranks tied for third in the MAC in games started (10), seventh in opponent batting average (.235, 57-for-243), tied for seventh in innings pitched (6.60), tied for eighth in wins and ninth in ERA and strikeouts.
