A new horse rescue facility has just opened its doors. It's name may be familiar, but what they're doing is a lot different.
Many people in Erie have heard of the A.N.N.A. Shelter. That's the non-profit that helps lost and abandoned dogs and cats in the city of Erie.
But now, operators of the A.N.N.A. Shelter have expanded. They're now helping neglected and abandoned horses at a farm in Harborcreek.
Ruth Thompson-Carroll, who also operates the A.N.N.A. Shelter in Erie, says her love of horses prompted her to create this shelter. Locally, when a horse is abused or abandoned, then seized by the state, she says there aren't many options for that horse, other than death.
So at this facility, a veterinarian will not only nurse the horse back to health, but Erin Lozowski, a horse trainer with Equine Revelation Training, evaluates the horse, and works to find it the perfect home.
Since opening just this year, the A.N.N.A. Shelter has saved three horses, finding them forever homes.
"Right now people don't know what to do when they see a starving horse, and with slaughter being legal in Pennsylvania it becomes something where unfortunately it's an option for people. So if we can circumvent that, help people out and step in if the state needs us, I want to do that." Said thompson-Carroll.
Ruth says right now, the shelter is staying small, only helping horses seized by the state. But eventually they plan to expand, to help owned animals that need help.
