Former Football Star Arrested in Major Marijuana Bust

Posted: Updated:

Former local football standout, 36-year-old Roosevelt Benjamen is behind bars charged with the key role in a 1.3 million dollar marijuana bust.

The PA Attorney General Narcotics and Drug Control unit has been working the case for over a year.  Agents arrested Benjamen Monday at his home at 311 East 21st Street.  He faces a dozen criminal charges including possession, delivery of a controlled substance, involvement in a corrupt organization and dealing in unlawful proceeds.

According to Dennis Tobin director of the drug unit, PA State Police, Erie Police, the F-B-I, border patrol and a grand jury investigation aided in the arrest.  It started last November 29 when investigators searched Benjamen's home and a van belonging to him.  They seized 400 pounds of marijuana packaged in bricks, and five vehicles, a Mercedes, two vans and two classic cars.   "It's the largest marijuana seizure ever in this area," said Tobin.  According to Tobin, the pot would sell for $200 an ounce on the street.  Authorities believe the marijuana was brought into Erie from Jamaica.

Investigators also arrested an alleged accomplice, 33-year-old John Anthony Woodward of 350 East 27th. He's charged with money laundering for allegedly using the $25,000 cash from the drug profits to purchase the Mercedes for Benjamen.

Authorities expect more arrests.  Their investigation is ongoing.

Roosevelt Benjamen played high school football for Erie's Central Tech and played professional arena football for local teams at the Erie Civic Center.
