Erie's Bomb Squad To Help With Pittsburgh Marathon Security

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of people will hit the streets of Pittsburgh this weekend, for the annual marathon.
And not surprisingly, because of the Boston marathon bombings, there's a big increase in security.
In fact, Erie law enforcement is being called in to help.

Upwards of 25,000 people will take part in the Pittsburgh marathon this Sunday.
And sadly, the deadly Boston marathon bombings that left three people dead and hundreds injured, will be on a lot of people's minds.
Including law enforcement.

As in years past, the Pittsburgh marathon will draw tens of thousands of runners and spectators.
And after the Boston bombings, Pittsburgh police announced they're taking every precaution, by increasing security.
Including more bomb dogs, and more law enforcement officers.

And that's including officers from Erie's bomb squad.
Erie's Bomb Squad Commanders tell us that two officers on Erie's team will head down to Pittsburgh to help.
They'll be taking a reactionary role, responding to any suspicious packages, checking to see if they're safe.

"With everyone on high alert, I assume anytime anyone has an abandoned package, or sets a book bag down (during the marathon), someone in the public will take notice of that and contact authorities, and we'll have to respond to that properly." Said Sgt. Dave Hudson of Erie's Bomb Squad.

"They will have us responding to calls of suspicious packages. They will not be searching for the routes or anything, that will be handled by the local bomb techs," said Sgt. Rick Erdely of Erie's Bomb Squad.

Pittsburgh police say there are already 350 uniformed officers, and 200 security guards scheduled to work the event.
