I had the chance to interview Floyd Mayweather last year while on assignment in Puerto Rico as was getting ready to fight Miguel Cotto and Mayweather came across as arrogant and snobbish. Then he spent some time in jail and perhaps that changed him a bit. His interviews leading up to his welterweight title bout with Robert Guerrero on Saturday night in Las Vegas shows a happier and kinder Mayweather. At least I hope that is the case. Just a little insight into athletes I get a chance to come across once in a while and get a glimpse of their personality.
I still believe, after covering high school sports in this area for over 25 years, that Roosevelt Benjamin was one of the best athletes I have covered. He could do it all on the football field and basketball court while at Central Tech. I think if he had not gotten sidetracked for whatever reason, he could've played in the NFL, he was that good. But we'll never know.
How about the latest on Jason Collins, the NBA Player who admitted to being gay. He had a relationship with a female for some 8 years and canceled their wedding just five days before it was to take place. Talk about a shocker. At least the female knows why it happened and perhaps can take some comfort in knowing it never would have worked out anyway.
