(AP) - A bill to immediately halt the expansion of Internet cafes statewide has cleared the Ohio Senate. The measure would extend a current moratorium on the opening of new sweepstakes gambling operations until June 2014. Current facilities' operators would have to file more thorough affidavits with the state, or they could face a fine of up to $1,000 a day.
BABY RAPIST EXECUTED
(AP) - A Mansfield man has been executed for killing a 6-month-old girl while raping her. Steve Smith was executed at 10:29 this morning by lethal injection at the state prison in Lucasville after his pleas for mercy were denied. The 46-year-old was convicted of aggravated murder in the September 1998 killing of his live-in girlfriend's daughter.
DRUG TESTS FOR WELFARE
(AP) - The Michigan House has approved legislation to require drug tests for some people in order to receive welfare. Another bill approved today strips families' benefits under the program if their children aren't meeting attendance requirements. The average monthly benefit for a family of three is $429 a month.
BOSTON BOMBING ARRESTS
(AP) - The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth says it's cooperating fully with authorities who've charged three other men in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings. The school says it has suspended one student and says the other two aren't enrolled. One student was charged with making false statements. The others are charged with conspiring to obstruct justice. The three were friends with the surviving suspect and are not accused of participating in the bombing.
ABORTION DOCTOR MURDER TRIAL
(AP) - A jury is weighing murder charges against a Philadelphia abortion provider. Jurors deliberated for their first full day without reaching a verdict. They're set to return tomorrow. Dr. Kermit Gosnell is charged with killing five people, including four viable babies allegedly born alive. He's also accused of performing abortions after Pennsylvania's 24-week limit and running a corrupt organization.
MAY SNOW STORM
(AP) - People in parts of Colorado and Wyoming are being hit with another round of wet spring snow. The May Day snow storm has been making travel difficult on Interstate 70 in Colorado's mountains and along Interstate 80 in southeastern Wyoming. Power outages are being reported in some areas. But the snow isn't having a big impact on Denver's airport.
