National Prayer Day in Erie

Posted: Updated:

A large crowd came together over the lunch hour today at Erie City Hall for the National Day of Prayer.

The event began nationally in the 1950's. And crowds have been gathering in Erie every year for the past 25 years, first in Perry Square, now indoors at council chambers.

Organizers feel prayer is needed now more than ever because of problems ranging from gun violence to poverty. Prayers were led by representatives of many sectors of the community.

Stephanie Lindenberger of Grace Fellowship Church said, "We cover each aspect of our community from government, media, business, religion, family and education. And we try to come together as a community and pray for each of the different spheres."

Organizers say they hope the event fosters Christian unity and helps stress the need to protect religious freedom.
