May 4 was Kentucky Derby Day and Presque Isle Downs and Casino offered a way for Erie to get in on the action. If you wanted to place a bet locally, the Downs made it very convenient, offering drive-thru wagering in the lower parking lot.
People lined up in their cars to pick a horse and lay down their money on the first race of the 2013 triple crown. If they bet on Orb, one of the favorites before the race, they no doubt saw a good payout. Orb paid $12.80 to win, $7.40 to place and $5.40 to show. Orb took the lead in the stretch and held on to win the 139th Run for the Roses. Golden Soul came in second, Revolutionary was third.
For those looking for more derby fun, inside the casino they served Mint Juleps and there was a Fancy Fillie Hat Contest with a four course meal as the prize.
