Fundraiser Remembers Cancer Victim

Posted: Updated:

It was a lighthearted event with a serious undertone in Edinboro on Sunday.

A local Relay for Life team held a fundraiser at Culbertson Hills Golf Course. Local women are supporting the American Cancer Society in memory of a friend who lost her battle with cancer last year.

"If you met Nicki you would always remember Nicki, she just always had a smile for everyone," said her former cheerleading coach Lora Miller.

The "Get Sassy for Life" fundraiser was full of people who Nicki Tecza- Radosevic left an impression on.

She passed away from cervical cancer, and team "Rad Racers" is joining the relay for life in her honor.

"It was a high school friend of ours and a lot of us were cheerleaders together," said Leslie Demaske, a friend of Nicki's and organizer of the event.

"It's the first relay that's come up since that happened, so we decided this would be a good way to honor her."

Vendors stood table to table, answering the call to action put out by Leslie and other friends of Nicki.

Many had personal reasons for setting up shop.

"My Aunt actually had breast cancer so it is awfully important to me," said vendor Sarah Wilkerson.

"Cancer is a disease that has affected all of us in some way through someone we know," said vendor Ingrid Bookhamer. "Our parents have been affected by it so I think the cause is really close to our hearts."

Whether selling glassware, jewelry or chocolate, vendors donated a portion of the money to the cancer society.

We're gonna definitely donate 10% and perhaps more depending on the sales," said Bookhamer.

Karen Simpson had a table as well, selling Dove Chocolates. "People that book a chocolate party, a certain percentage of their party sales will also go back," she said, "so it's not just today, it's something that I hope will continue as people plan parties throughout the summer."

It was a full day of shopping and pampering. From manicures to makeup, the mood was relaxed.

It was something friends say Nicki would have enjoyed.

"If Nicki was still here with us and this was being done for someone Nicki would have been right in here with us and helping us and doing what she could do," said Miller.

"We just thought of the summer and rejuvenation and life, and women coming together to support the American Cancer Society," said Damaske.
