Julian Bond Speaks at Erie Law Day Event

Posted: Updated:

One of the leaders of the civil rights movement, Julian bond, was the keynote speaker at Erie's annual Law Day luncheon at the Bayfront Convention Center.

During the 1960's, he organized voter drives and sit ins, rising to prominence as the founder of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. He was personally involved in many of the key moments of the movement.

Bond told the local audience of more than 500, that he was thrilled to see an African-American elected president. But he said that has not meant an end to the struggle for civil rights.

Bond said, "I don't think it has meant the change many people thought it would. Many people thought electing him meant nirvana. That is not true. We still have work to do and have to get at it as quickly as we can."

During the Law Day ceremony, the Erie County Bar Association presented 3 major awards. The Pro Bono Award went to lawyer Laurie TeWinkle. The winner of the Liberty Bell award, given to a non-lawyer was presented to Max Peaster. And the Chancellor of the Bar honor was given to Attorney Ritchie Marsh.
