GECAC Recognizes Retired & Senior Volunteers

Posted: Updated:

GECAC, The Greater Erie Community Action Committee recognized 501 senior citizens who volunteer their time and talent as part of their Retired & Senior Volunteer Program.  The volunteers were honored at a luncheon at the Bel Aire Clarion Hotel.

Brian Duke, PA Secretary of Aging came to Erie for the event.  According to Duke, Pennsylvania has the fourth largest senior population in the nation.  The senior citizens volunteer throughout Erie County delivering meals, making wooden toys and doing other people's taxes through the Vita program.

Anna and 89 year old volunteer who knits hats, scarves, mittens and blankets for children in head start was honored as the top volunteer for 2013.  She knits as many as 800 items in a year.  The volunteer coordinator who discovered her talent helped her to blossom.

Duke says he wants to see volunteers encourage others to volunteer and unleash the power of Pennsylvania's senior citizens.
