Streets Bureau Chief Retiring

Posted: Updated:

The man in charge of keeping Erie streets in shape is retiring this month. Pete Petriani has spent 38 years with the Erie Streets Bureau for the past 13 years.

He says his biggest challenge has been coping with a huge cut in manpower. From 120 employees in the department when he started in the 1970's, to just 43 workers now.

Another big challenge, clearing streets during winter storms. And dealing with a lot of taxpayers who want immediate action, especially when city plows push snow into driveways.

Petriani said, "We plowed the streets. The snow is in their driveway. As much as we would like to help, it is a no brainer. We can't go up there and plow their apron from them. That just can't happen."

Petriani says his retirement won't really hit him until the first storm next winter  when he can stay home and just relax.
