Boating Safety

Posted: Updated:

The start of the long Memorial Day weekend is now just over a week away. So the "unofficial" start of the local boating season is almost here. It means a lot of safety checks for the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.

We went along today on a patrol on Pymatuning Lake where plenty of  fishermen are already out on the water, even on weekdays.

Crews do a lot of stops, making sure the boaters have all the required equipment, especially life jackets. They know accidents can happen quickly, especially when a bad storm moves in.

Waterways Conservation Officer Matt Visosky said, "The wind picks up, this lake can get really rough, and very dangerous and for the most part the boats we deal with are primarily smaller boats."

In addition to life jackets other key equipment a boater must carry include a fire extinguisher plus a sound producing device such as a bell, horn or whistle.
