CLEVELAND – Bowling Green's Brooke Pleger was named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week after the redshirt sophomore set a MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet record to win the hammer throw over the weekend.
Pleger, a nursing major with a 3.837 grade point average, threw the hammer 216-feet-3 to become the first BGSU student-athlete to win an event at the MAC Championship since 2005. She broke a record that had stood since Akron's Stevi Large threw 213-10 in 2009 and went on to win the NCAA National Championship in the event. Pleger earned first team All-MAC honors for winning the conference title in the event.
For her efforts, Pleger was named the conference's Most Outstanding Field Athlete for the season and is ranked second in the East region heading into the NCAA regional championship May 23-25 in Greensboro, N.C. The top 12 finishers at the regional meet will advance to the NCAA National Championship June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
