Erie Police Prepared For Perry 200 Parade

Posted: Updated:

100,000 people are expected to crowd the streets of Erie this weekend, for the Perry 200 Grand Patriotic Parade.
It's a huge event, which requires a lot of security.

Erie police over the past several weeks have been organizing their plans for security on Saturday, and with a celebration as big as what's expected, it's no easy task.

Organizers are getting ready for what's expected to be one of the biggest parades in Erie ever, with an estimated crowd of 100,000 people.
The nearly 2 mile parade route starts at 12th and Cherry, heads east to State, and it ends at 4th and State.

There are about 200 units, 50 floats, thousands of participants, and a lot of dignitaries including the governor, state representatives, and senators.
You put all those people together, along with the tens of thousands of spectators, and it's going to be a busy day for local police.
Erie's Police chief says there will be an extra 35/40 officers assigned to the parade.
They'll be focusing on traffic control and crowd control, but will about 3 dozen officers be enough?

"We believe so. We have all the major intersections manned as well as some other extra security measures of course with an event such as this, so we're very comfortable I think with what we have in place."

Police are going to have officers stationed along the parade route at major intersections.
Sheriff's deputies are included in the officers that are providing extra security.
